MAA Update – March 2024

22nd March is the first anniversary of the Scottish Government’s Apology for Historic adoption policy and practice.  There will be a report by Duncan Kennedy on BBC News covering progress so far and an interview with a mother who lost her son to adoption in 1972.

– On 6-8 March we had a table at  the very well attended TUC Women’s conference in Central London.
There was great interest in our campaign. We gave out leaflets, and talked to a lot of women who promised to sign our petition and spread word about the campaign.  We also made several new contacts who may be able to help.   Diana, Linda, Lindsey, Jeannot & Veronica all enthusiastically spread the word.

– Petition – Demand an Apology for Historic Forced Adoptions. We need more signatures, so please share this link or direct people to the QR code on this site. Please sign and get your friends and family to do so as well.

– We have been looking at fundraising options. Please sign up to support MAA via https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/movement-for-an-adoption-apology  or via our website.
Donations are made by the retailer when you shop – there is no cost to you.

–  Last, but by no means least, we’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to a MAA Day on Saturday June 1st 10am-4pm where you will have the opportunity to meet other mothers, adoptees and MAA supporters.  We’ve located a venue not far from Covent Garden which is conveniently situated close to public transport and many eateries.
The venue is    Crown Court Church of Scotland  –  Russell St, London WC2B 5EZ
We’ve booked a room with tables and seating for 50-60 people.  Tea and coffee will be available.
To cover the hire costs there is an Entry fee of £10
– Concessions £5
– attendance via Zoom £5.

Online booking available soon – please email maa.adoptionapology@gmail.com to let us know you are interested and we’ll send you the booking link as soon as it is available..

The day will be structured to help and support you, so please let us know the topics you would like to discuss, for example Counselling – Access to records – Reunions and so on.

We have booked several speakers on searching, counselling and  the author of the the book “Taken”, Michelle Pearson will be giving a presentation. She’ll bring copies of her book to the event.

As we’re aware that travel isn’t always possible, we’ll be setting up an option to attend via Zoom, which is available at the concessionary rate.

Although interest in this event has so far has been fairly low key, we’d appreciate your expressions of interest so we have an idea of attendance. We’ll need a minimum number to make the event viable (and cover the cost of the hall).

Thank you for supporting MAA – we will continue to press this Government or its replacement to give us the full Apology we all want.
Signed
